Volunteers are asked to meet on Saturday, May 29 at Pinecrest Cemetery in Sandpoint at 9 am to help place American Flags on the gravesites of our fallen heroes. At 11 am at the Sandpoint VFW Hall on that same day, a live feed on a big screen TV will be showing the opening ceremonies of the new World War II Memorial from Washington D.C. Refreshments will be provided and the festivities will be videotaped for a later, 2 pm showing that afternoon.

DAV Chapter #15's Medical Marijuana Initiative, which was narrowly voted down at the Idaho State DAV Convention this month, will be brought forth again at next year's Convention in hopes the 'rank and file grunts' will have an opportunity to vote on it beforehand. This year, only Chapter Commanders voted on the proposition.

The DAV would like to express their thanks to Clark Fork's VFW Post, as well as to local vet supporter Anker Rasmussen, for their generous donations to the DAV's Van Fund. $13,000 is needed as DAV Chapter #15's contribution to the project, and interested citizens can make donations at Sandpoint's Wells Fargo Bank, payable to "DAV Van Fund." The project will help provide transportation for local veterans to the Spokane VAMC for medical appointments on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and will help ease the overload on the venerable "Libby Bus" which only runs two days a week. (Tuesday and Thursday)

It was reported in last month's TRJ that Priest River's DAV Post #25 would be absorbed into Sandpoint's Chapter #15, but at the recent State Convention it was decided to give Priest River's Chapter until July 31 to come into compliance with DAV Idaho state regulations.  Chapter #15 would, however, like to encourage Priest River's members to attend a Sandpoint meeting (third Wednesday of every month, 7:30 pm at the VFW Hall in Sandpoint) and help out with a number of projects we're working on.

DAV Chapter #15's upcoming Second Annual Used Book Sale is still taking donations of your old winter reading materials. To arrange a pick-up, please call 208-265-9881 and leave a message. The event is tentatively scheduled for the first weekend in July at the VFW Hall, again in conjunction with VVA Chapter #890's annual yard sale. To donate items for the VVA Sale, please call the VFW Hall, or you may call Don at 208-255-5291 or Russ at 208-263-5419.

I might remind the public this Memorial Weekend that these fundraising event dollars go directly to helping our local veterans in need. This month alone, funds were directly responsible for helping build a new wheelchair ramp for one local veteran, along with helping another vet fallen on hard times with food and medical expenses, so if you can't find anything you'd like to purchase, feel free to drop a buck in the donation jar.

Veterans Against War, in conjunction with members of Sandpoint's Quaker Church, will be holding a weekly Peace Vigil from noon until 1 pm at Fifth and Cedar in Sandpoint every Sunday after Church services in the hope of helping halt the rapidly escalating fiasco in Iraq. For further information, call "Bean" at 208-265-3599 or Jody at 208-265-9881.
