Thursday evening, September 17, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., the Sandpoint Transition Initiative and East Bonner County Library District will offer a free showing of the Film, “Garbage Warrior.”  This film combines several issues of local interest: recycling, energy independence, and architectural innovation .  Discussion on related local activities will follow the film.

“Garbage Warrior” is the story of Michael Reynolds, a maverick architect who has been challenging bureaucratic traditions since 1968 by utilizing beer cans, tires and other unorthodox materials and designing housing systems that produce their own power and recycle rainwater and sewage.    Even food gardening becomes part of the system.  Reynolds   and his crew have built these “earthships” for clients around the globe.

After dealing for years with New Mexico housing regulations, Reynolds got involved with politics, rewrote the law and lobbied unsuccessfully for its passage.  Frustrated, he flew to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to help the victims of the Asian tsunami build new homes incorporating recycled and natural materials, garnering praise from the Indian authorities.  Back in the United States, hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters gave increased attention to Reynolds’ efforts to promote cheap, energy independent, environmentally-responsible housing.  The film follows Reynolds’ struggle against entrenched interests to its climax.

This is a free event, one in a series of presentations sponsored by STI and cosponsored by the library.  Water, coffee and teas will be provided.  BYOM (bring your own mug).  The library is located at the corner of Cedar and Division Streets.  For more information about STI or this program, visit the website at www.sandpointtransitioninitiative.org , email sti.education@gmail.com or call 208-255-1731.
