NIC kicks off the fall season with jazz concert

The North Idaho College Jazz Ensemble will kick off the season of music events with a jazz concert.

The North Idaho College Jazz Ensemble will team up with the vocal group Jazz Co. to present “Jazz on My Mind” Saturday, Nov. 14.

Jazz Co. will perform pieces such as the Carl Strommen arrangement of Johnny Mandel’s “The Shadow of Your Smile” and Ken Kraintz’s “Come on Down.” Soloist Sarah Bligh will be featured in Jule Styne’s “Make Someone Happy.” LeeAnn Aelyn will perform on piano, Jordan Kees on bass and Aaron May on percussion.

Jazz Co. comprises more than 20 members directed by NIC Choir Director Max Mendez.

The NIC Jazz Ensemble will perform pieces such as the John Bambridge arrangement of “Poor Butterfly” and the Quincy Jones and Sammy Nestico arrangement of “Grace.”

The NIC Jazz Ensemble, directed by NIC Band Director Terry Jones, features NIC students, community members and music educators from throughout the region, some with more than 50 years experience on their instruments. Featured soloists include Phil Aarhus and David Cooper on trumpet and flugelhorn, Alex Carr and Chris Waltrip on tenor saxophone, Joel Sandford on alto saxophone, Shayler Slothower on flugelhorn and George Conrad on piano.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in NIC’s Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center. The performance is free and open to the public.
