Public Health Officials are Tracking Idaho Salmonella Cases

 

Consumers Warned to Avoid Eating Sprouts from North Idaho Grower

 

Idaho state public health officials are investigating a number of Salmonella cases believed to be connected to the consumption of alfalfa sprouts. The investigation is ongoing and includes 19 ill persons from northern Idaho, eastern Washington and western Montana.  Of the persons reported with Salmonella infection linked to the outbreak, six have reported consumption of sprouts obtained from a northern Idaho grower, Evergreen Produce, located in Moyie Springs, Idaho. 

Idaho public health officials are recommending that people avoid eating sprouts from Evergreen Produce and discard any Evergreen Produce sprouts in their possession while the investigation is ongoing.

Salmonellosis is an acute bacterial infection that can cause diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Symptoms usually develop within one to five days after eating contaminated food. Most cases resolve without the need for medical attention, and antibiotics are not advised for most persons with uncomplicated illness. The risk of severe illness is particularly high among the elderly, the immunocompromised, and the very young. Some people with salmonellosis develop serious illness that can lead to hospitalization and even death.  Health officials advise persons who have consumed sprouts and experience these symptoms to seek medical attention.
