An Event Center on the Other Side of Ordinary

After five years in the making, Kree and Naydia Kirkman have made paradise in Montana even better. Blue Creek Retreat, located just across the state line in Heron, Mont., is an event center specializing in weddings, anniversary parties, business meetings, family reunions and corporate events.

Blue Creek Retreat is directed by Eric Opland, an 8-year resident of Clark Fork, assisted by his beautiful wife Jen. (Many readers will recognize Jen as a member of the Heron Players.) Eric would like to work with local schools, church groups, home schools, and arts and crafts groups to provide a place for parents and people in general, activities which will surrounded them with environmentally friendly technology.

Blue Creek retreat already has ten employees and will be offering the community more jobs in the future. From the almost medieval pewter dishware to the hand-carved trim on each doorway, Blue Creek Retreat is an undiscovered treasure in our own backyard.

As a family man himself, Eric seeks to cater to enjoyable, family-oriented fun. The rooms are beautifully designed, each one different. The two bridal suites come complete with a fireplace and a Jacuzzi, while the "Gables Room" boasts a corner-jetted tub. Weddings can be held in gazebos, with a dinner in the 2,800 square foot banquet hall.

There are many things to do at Blue Creek; there are four gold mines, where in the future they may offer small-scale gold panning. New Clydsedales pull the trolley for weddings and a hayride in the summer with a sleigh for winter activities. There is an amazing, 6-story barn that houses the Clydsedales, with a 1,500 square-foot event room with a stage and a dance floor, multi media rooms and more.

Multicolored tile floors with a custom-painted ceiling of clouds make it an outstanding place for pictures, including a heart-shaped pond for that romantic nature. The Conservatory/Greenhouse offers a gift shop and craft rooms.

The Pend d’Oreille Winery and Blue Creek Retreat are hosting together a wine weekend from June 29 through July 1. The cost of the weekend includes all meals and wine. It will begin with a wine tasting and education on Friday night followed by dinner, a light wine lunch on Saturday, and a five course dinner with different wine pairings that evening. Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday are also included. Space is very limited

Blue Creek Retreat is an "all green technology" center, intent on the conservation of power, resources and recycling. Peak climbs, bike trails, hiking, ATV trails, swimming and even huckleberry picking are just a few of the adventures awaiting. There is also a murder mystery weekend in the works. For those who remember and enjoyed the game, "Clue," as a child, the River Journal has it on good authority that the guilty party is Colonel Mustard, in the conservatory, with a pipe wrench!
