Farmer's Markets are also open in Sandpoint, and opening in Thompson Falls

Thompson Falls- Are you a “locavore?” If you have decided to frequent the Thompson Falls Market this summer you might just be. Locavore is the word for someone who buys seasonal and locally grown food products. In 2007 The Oxford Dictionary made locavore the 2007 word of the year, recognizing how the use of the word has grown.

Yet, it is more than just a word. The locavore movement encourages consumers to buy from farmer’s markets or even to grow or pick their own food, arguing that fresh, local products are more nutritious and taste better.

Produce and other farm products found at the grocery store travels an average of 1,500 miles before ending up on our plates. This globalization of the food supply has serious consequences for the environment (fuel consumption), our health (think recent tomato recall), our communities (lost jobs and revenue) and our tastebuds (vine ripened vs. box ripened).

As the Thompson Falls Market opens on Saturday, June 28 at 10 am, visitors will find such items as baked goods, fresh eggs, crafts, artwork and quilts. As the summer progresses, local farmers will share what is in season and ready to harvest. Each week promises to offer something new to enjoy.

The Thomspon Falls Market is open every Saturday, June 28 through September 13 from 10 am to 2 pm and the second Wednesday of July, August and September from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm. The market will be located on the west lot by the Falls Motel, at the corner of Lincoln Street and Maiden Lane in Thompson Falls.

Market information and vendor and musician sign up information can be found at www.ThompsonFallsMarket.com or by calling coordinator Katrina Wright at 406-827-3559. (Information provided by Katrina Wright.)

Sandpoint- The granddaddy of local farmer’s markets, located in downtown Sandpoint in the Farmin Park, has been up and running for weeks.

Now in its twentieth year, the Market is open every Saturday morning from 9 am to 1 pm, and every Wednesday afternoon from 3 to 5:30 pm. Currently available are specialty soaps and candles, jams and jellies, plant starts, baked goods, crafts, and lettuce and other greens.

On July 19 the market will hold a 20th anniversary celebration.
