Dennis Nicholls, 53, passes away in Noxon, Montana

Dennis Nicholls, founder of the River Journal, died Monday, May 4 in Noxon, Mont. after a long illness.

Dennis was born in Richmond, Virginia on July 25, 1955, the son of Robert Blair and Anna Nicholls. He was a graduate of Huguenot High School in Richmond, and then attended the University of Montana in Kalispell, studying botany. He went to work for the Forest Service, later becoming a private contractor for the same. In 1993 he, along with Paul Baker, started the River Journal, a newspaper covering the areas of Heron, Noxon and Trout Creek in Montana, along with Clark Fork and Hope just across the Idaho line. The newspaper grew and in 1997 expanded to include all of Bonner and Sanders counties. In 2001 Dennis sold the paper and began writing area hiking guides for Keokee Books. Two guides, “Trails of the Wild Cabinets,” and “Trails of the Wild Selkirks,” are in print.

For the last year and a half Dennis spent time in the woods, including a stint hiking the entire length of the Missouri River. He has left a manuscript describing that trip, for which his survivors are exploring publication possibilities.

Dennis was preceded in death by his father and two sisters, Linda and Loretta. He is survived by his mother, his brothers Archie and Carlton, and his sister Sheryl, along with a very large extended family in the Richmond area, as well as many, many friends.

Memorial services will be held in Richmond and a private ceremony for friends will be held locally at a later time. Nicholls’ great love was to hike in the area mountains – his ashes will be scattered in the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness area.
