Just slightly cooler than average.
After a record cool April, May was just slightly cooler than average, with a reported high of 89 degrees at Noxon on the 17th and lows of 27 degrees at both locations early in the month. May was relatively dry with only about half of normal rainfall. Totals were 1.54 inches at Noxon and 1.53 inches at Heron. There was no reported snowfall, but the last measurable snow pack at the gauge at Noxon was May 3, the latest on record there, and the last trace of snow in the forest was observed on May 16, the first of four consecutive 80 degree days. The date of the last freeze usually occurs in May at these locations, but range widely between late April and late June. July frosts are not rare. The last one at Heron occurred July 7, 1977.
