Hike #397

33°       April 11, 2011…Nordics…hike # 397

We had another sick day last week…I took a turn for the worse and while I was willing to give a hike a shot, Jim said no way. It was the right thing to do in my feverish state…and persistent cough. I think that maybe now I have finally beginning to kick this virus but I still am not 100%…it only took about 4 weeks. Grrrrr…..

Schweitzer closed for season yesterday and today is Employee Appreciation Day…we always go. We had a very mixed bag of weather today…always a PITA. I started out with full face gear on for the strong wind and face-stinging blowing sleet. It wasn’t long before that ended and the sun came out and I panicked. I had listened to Jim this morning when he laughed at my different sunglasses on the counter…he said I wouldn’t be needing those today as the weather report said hard rain all day here at home and 100% snow all day at Schweitzer. Thank goodness I had enough sense to pack my ski goggles, which saved my eyes when the sun came out. The sun warmed things up a bit and we had to take some layers off. But then the skies got black again and it began to blow hard and snow equally as hard. Time to get all the hoods up and put goggles back on. I hate wearing those things…and hats and hoods too. It was cold enough that even our thumbs got cold.

Since my body was winding down…I had little energy today…we decided to not do the longer route, and checked out a couple of trails we have not been on before. One was leading us completely in the wrong direction so we just’ snow whacked’ down to the next trail which eventually lead us back to the village. Extremely high winds…we suspected that they even closed down the lift to the top. From up top we could not see the chairs moving. Not too much partying going on but I could see everyone upstairs inside and dancing! Lots of wind damage in town with 45-55 mph winds reported.
