Schweitzer Hike #398

30°   big snow

April 18, 2011…Schweitzer…hike # 398

Schweitzer is now closed but snow has been falling steadily all week up on the mountain and at home as well. Where is spring? So while we were contemplating a low level hike for a snowshoe break, I couldn’t resist another nice hike in a snowstorm…and it was great.

We chose a different route, going up the cat track, then up to the big six person chair lift Stella where by now the storm was so beautiful. Snow fell very hard and there was no wind. Not a soul was around; it was so peaceful and so quiet. It was snack time so we huddled under the lift to get out of the weather a bit…had mango and some hot chocolate, which really hit the spot today. Since the temperature was dropping, we decided we needed to put on all the warm layers. I was now thankful I had double layers on the bottom as well.

From there we headed down the steep ski run, one which we have walked up many times before, cut off at Cloudwalker and picked up Wolf Ridge trail and hiked to the end. Did I mention it was so beautiful? While we didn’t want to turn around, we both were feeling the effects of snowshoeing thru deep virgin snow…hard work. We couldn’t believe how fast the snow was piling up...our tracks on cat track were totally gone. The village was reminiscent of a ghost town, with no people and all the clothing and ski shops cleaned out and shuttered up. No more grocery stores or pizza shops. We felt so tired as we wound our back to the truck and drove away while hard snow continued to fall.
