Hike #420

Sep 19, 2011…Lost Lake & Mud Lake …Tr #80, #81 and #82…hike # 420

rain thunder     partly cloudy         56° - 62°

They said the weather would cool down and rain some on Sunday and Monday…they were right. Woke up to pouring rain this morning and felt cheated out of a last of summer hike. Forecast was for 70% rain in the mountains with thunderstorms. And 10mph wind. Jim suggested Two Mouth Lakes but those lakes are so pretty and with weather predicted, it would not be a good picture taking day. He then said that he remembered two ugly lakes we could hike to! So we debated as to which of our rainy day hikes we would do, one of which was the hike with the two ugly lakes. Although the Monday Hikers, a local group of hikers, were going to be at Mineral Point, we were going to head toward the two lakes instead of Lake Pend Oreille. We saw about 12 of them just getting ready to head out.

Dressed in our rainy day finery, we headed in the opposite direction of the other hikers, thru the beautiful trail toward the two lakes. Of course, as luck would have it, the rain stopped, the clouds disappeared and the sun came out to reveal a gorgeous clear day. Oh, well…there was just no real way to know. When we got to the cut off for both lakes, we decided to do Lost Lake first, and then come back and do the loop to Mud Lake. They were each as ugly as ever but found some interesting pics to shoot. We lingered longer than we normally would because it was going to be a low mileage day on a mostly flat trail, though we still did manage to rack up at least an ‘eight miler’ on this short but sweet three-trail day.
