Hike #426

Oct 31, 2011…Schweitzer…hike # 426

Since I had to take care of something early this morning, we got a late start so just headed up to Schweitzer. Forecast was for rain in town and snow in the mountains but the sun was out. Driving up we thought we saw snow on the top but as we got closer, it was just the white granite. There are spots though that still had the snow that fell up there last week. We thought there would be much more.

The village was quiet…the seats are back on the lifts and a few guys working on things. We started down our usual way, Overland trail, then up to Picnic Point and took pics. The sun shining on the deciduous pine larch was so picturesque.  The vibrant red of the huckleberry bushes is gone now, with most of the leaves just lying on the ground. We met one bicyclist. Continued on to Overland, Wolf Ridge, up Zip Down run to Stella, and then down the cattrack to the village. We ate lunch and drank hot chocolate on the steps of the first aid building. The ground was mushy muddy due to the constant freezing and defrosting occurring during the past week. This was good for seeing the huge moose tracks. Snow covered some of the trails and lots along the side…pretty soon all these Nordics trails will be covered in 10’ of snow.

About the time we turned around, we began to see snowflakes, and it picked up some and at one point was snowing really nice. It is good to see it again.

I forgot to put HotHands in my gloves today and Jim wondered why I kept saying my hands were cold…he was shocked when I told him why!

turned on the GPS on my phone and with the help of an app, was able to track our hike and get distance and time as well. However, this wonderful feature is only going to work at places like Schweitzer where I can get internet and a satellite signal.

It was a great hike albeit short but we still manage to hike 7½ miles…we walked fast today.
