Softball season kicks off in Heron

It wasn’t 20 below, and there wasn’t a blizzard blowing, but it was a typical winter’s day in Heron, Montana when 70 people took to the ball diamond for the second annual Snowjoke Softball tournament. There was over a foot of snow on the ground and it snowed off and on those two days late in January, sometimes quite heavily. But the elements did not deter these diehard softball players from competing at this benefit fundraiser and dozens of spectators from cheering on their favorite team.

This year’s tournament was the brainchild of Tony McLinden of Sandpoint. His parents live in Heron and his mom, Jo, is a board member for the Heron Community Center. Arrangements were made for use of the softball field behind the old Heron School for the weekend tournament for the purpose of raising funds to help a Sandpoint family in need. A couple, who preferred to remain anonymous, were blessed with twins late last year, but they were born prematurely, and one of the children eventually died. Tony’s idea was to raise some money to help the small family with medical expenses stemming from the premature births.

Seven teams registered for the tournament, each paying $175 to play. One team came from the Heron/Noxon area and the other six hailed from Sandpoint. Tee shirts were donated by Meyer’s SporTees at Bonner Mall in Sandpoint. Concession sales went to the community center.

It was a great family weekend, as kids played on mountains of snow piled up for sliding, and grownups played one of America’s favorite games while reaching out a helping hand to someone in need. A fire barrel helped keep cold hands warm and there was plenty of refreshment to go around.

Softball tournaments are becoming an annual event in Heron, both in the winter and in the spring. To learn more about upcoming events, contact Jo McLinden at 406-847-2243.
