Sandpoint Parks and Recreation Activities for January

YOUTH BASKETBALL for grades 3, 4, 5, 6

Play in this program will be split into 3rd and 4th Girls, 3rd and 4th Boys, 5th and 6th Girls, 5th and 6th Boys.  Practices will be held once a week at area schools with games played on Sat. starting on Feb. 6th and ending on March 20th.  Sandpoint Youth Sport Jerseys are required.  Registration forms will be distributed in area grade schools after Christmas break.  Scholarships available if needed.  Contact Parks and Rec. at 263-3613 for more information.

Fees: 1 Player: $35 county/$30 City

SANDPOINT PARKS & RECREATION OPEN GYM BASKETBALL

Open Gym Basketball continues! Open gym will begin Sunday, January 10th at the Sandpoint High School Gym and continue each week until the middle of March. The gym will be available for girls and boys in grades 3-12 on Sunday afternoons from 2:30-4pm from Jan. 10th through Mar. 14th (Sunday, Feb. 7th is cancelled!).  Gym use for youth is free!  Open Gym will also be available for adult play from 4-6pm on Sunday evenings Jan. 10th through Mar. 14th (Sunday, Feb. 7th is cancelled).  Adults are defined as ages 18 and over.  Entry fee for adults is $2 payable at the door.  Special THANKS to Lake Pend Oreille School District for partnering to offer this open gym opportunity.  For more information, please call Sandpoint Parks & Rec. at 263-3613.

 

 

ORIGAMI WORKSHOP

Join the Impact Academy and teacher Kayoko for this new and exciting offering through Parks and Recreation:

Origami (from meaning “folding” and kami meaning “paper”) is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding. Kayoko will introduce traditional ways to make things with a piece of paper, fold and crease without using glue or scissors.

This Origami Workshop costs $12.00 ($2.00 city discount), with materials included, and takes place on Friday, January 8th from 3:30-4:30pm.  This workshop is offered for ages 7+.  Please pre-register by Wednesday, January 6th with Sandpoint Parks and Recreation, 1123 Lake St, or call 263-3613 for more information.

JAPANESE CALLIGRAPHY- NEW 

Join the Impact Academy and teacher Kayoko for this new and exciting offering through Parks and Recreation:

Japanese Calligraphy is the artistic way to write the Japanese Characters using brush.  Kayoko will introduce some simple Japanese Characters and give the instruction how to use brush and write characters on the paper.

This Calligraphy Workshop costs $12.00 ($2.00 city discount), with materials included, and takes place on Friday, January 15th from 3:30-4:30pm.  This workshop is offered for ages 7+.  Please pre-register by Wednesday, January 13th with Sandpoint Parks and Recreation, 1123 Lake St, or call 263-3613 for more information.

ECO ART

In these sessions we will reduce, reuse, and recycle materials that can be normally be found around the house into something beautiful and unique.  We will give these recycled items new life instead of throwing them away. (With instructor Suzy Avina).  These classes are open to ages 6-14yrs, and will be held at the Sandpoint Community Hall from 4:30-5:15pm.  You can choose from January Session #1 offered on Tuesdays, Jan. 12,19, and 26th or Jan. Session #2 offered on Thursdays, Jan. 14, 21, and 28th for $20 ($2 city discount).

Class Features:  Making memories, Paper art, and Glass bottle art.

 

 

SIMPLE, QUICK, AND NUTRITIOUS BEGINNER COOKING

 

This class is great for the beginner cook and children that want to learn the basics and do not have a lot of time to prepare something.  This class will focus on recipes, easy to know terms, nutrition, using the microwave and other simple cooking equipment.  You will also get to eat your masterpieces.  Parents are welcome to accompany your child.  Call Suzy Avina for more information: 946-6640.  This great class is open to children ages 6yrs and up, and will be held at the Sandpoint Community Hall from 3:15-4:15pm.  You have the option of enrolling in Jan. Session #1 on Tuesdays, Jan. 12, 19, and 26 or Jan. Session #2 on Thursdays Jan. 14, 21, 28.  The class fee is $20 ($2 city discount). Hurry in and register. 

Class Features: Fun with veggies, Surprise food, and Tacos!

 

 

CHILDREN'S INTRO TO TAEKWONDO / KARATE AND SELF DEFENSE

This great program is taught by Sandpoint Taekwondo. This course teaches basic self-defense skills and highlights the importance of self-discipline in a child friendly setting.  This course fee includes 3 lessons and a uniform. Course begins on Monday and includes two more classes that same week. This class is open to children from 5-12 years of age and takes place at Sandpoint Taekwondo (31829 Hwy 200- the old Funtastics building) from 3:15-4pm.  Session # 3 starts Monday, January 11th.  Cost is $20/child ($2 city discount).  REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Friday, January 8th.

 

 

LITTLE MOZART’S MUSIC PROGRAM

Sandpoint Parks and Recreation would like to introduce the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint and offer their mommy and me early music education programs.  The little Mozart’s program is sequentially structured from birth through ages six years to nurture and develop the innate musical gifts with which your child was born.  This program involves experiences to cultivate and expand the precious gifts of listening, singing, moving, playing instruments, creating, and imagining.  Indeed, babies are born with the ability to communicate in the language of music!  These classes are for kids ages; Birth -6yrs.  Classes are held at Studio 1 Dance Academy (521 Cedar St.) Fee is $75 (for the six week session) Session #2 will be held on Saturday’s, Jan. 16,23,30, Feb. 6,13, 20. 

Space is limited, Registration Deadline is Friday January 15th.

HEALTH, BEAUTY, AND WELLNESS

Life can get stressful and money is precious these days so come and join Suzy Avina from Avina By Nature Consulting to learn how to make items just as our grandparents did.  Why buy everything you use?  Learn how to make it yourself and have fun doing it.  Know exactly what you are putting into those products for your body, and avoid the unnecessary chemicals.  This class is open to ages 12 yrs and up, it will be held Wednesdays Jan. 13, 20, and 27th at Sandpoint Community Hall, you can choose from Session #1 from 3:15-4:45pm or Session #2 from 5:30-7pm.  Class fee is $30 ($3 city discount).

Class Features: Making body butters and ointments, Herbs for the cold season, and Making caledula oil and what it is used for.

 

 

COOKING ON A BUDGET

Learn how to cook nutritional meals while learning how to do it on a budget.  Taught by Suzy from Avina By Nature Consulting, you will cook dinner together, learn how to make more than one meal, add organics to your diet, and learn how kids can help in the kitchen.  Also a great class to take with family!  This class is open to ages 8 and up (5-7 may attend, but must be accompanied by a parent)  Come join us from 5:30-7pm at the Sandpoint Community Hall.  Session #1 is offered Tuesday Jan. 12, 19, and 26th.  Session #2 is offered Thursdays Jan. 14, 21, and 28th.  These sessions cost $20 for ages 5-12, ages 13 and up $29 ($2 city disc.)

Class Features: Beans, the many ways, Mexican Fiesta, and Simple Soups.

 

 

INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED BRIDGE

Join instructor Mary Faux to learn Intermediate and Advanced techniques of Bridge!  As usual, Mary creates a FUN and inviting opportunity to take your bridge playing to the next level.  Fees include all essential class materials.  Take home workbooks with lesson exercised are available for an additional $5 fee but are not mandatory.  Class will be held on Wednesdays, Jan 27, Feb. 3, 10, 17, 24, Mar. 3, 10, and 17 from 7-9pm at Sandpoint Community Hall.  Class Fee is $30 ($1 City discount) ($1 Senior discount) Pre-register at Sandpoint Parks and Recreation 263-3613 by Jan. 25th. 

 

 

U.S.C.G.A.-BOATING SKILLS AND SEAMANSHIP

This is a 9 week course covering navigation, charting, mechanics, rules of the road, courtesies and customs, seamanship, ropes and knots, sailing basics, boat part identification, safety procedures and more.  Register at Sandpoint Parks & Rec. by Thursday January 28th 1123 Lake St. in Sandpoint. Class will be held on, Tuesday’s Feb. 1, 8, 15, 22, Mar. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, April 5 & 12 from 7-9:30pm at the Sandpoint VFW Hall.  Cost is $50 (Make checks Payable to U.S.C.G.A).

 

 

FREE – “DECISION MAKING IN THE WINTER BACKCOUNTRY”

This winter the Idaho Panhandle Avalanche Center will introduce topics concerning “Decision making in the backcountry”.  Topics discussed will include; route finding, hazard evaluation, group dynamics, and human factors.  We will go over scenarios to facilitate discussion and stimulate thought provoking issues. This will be an interactive presentation focusing on winter conditions in North Idaho utilizing slides and video.  A variety of recreational user groups from skiers to snowshoers and snowmobilers, and multiple age groups, are the target audience for these two workshops.  Pre-register at Sandpoint Parks and Recreation.  Session #1 will be held on January 6th, 2010 starting at 6pm located downstairs in the conference room in the new county building in Sandpoint, 1500 Hwy 2, west of town on the way to Dover.

 

 

DISCOUNTED "CREATE" WORKSHOP - JANUARY

Come and get creative with Suzy from Avina By Nature Consulting and friends for a workshop that won’t break your wallet.  These workshops are a way of thanking the community and giving back.  Each workshop can include art, health, beauty, nutrition, herbs, aromatherapy, gardening, organizing your life, or taking care of your skin and body.  Idaho virtual academy students will also be there collecting food for the food bank so please bring a can of food or non-perishable item to help if you can.  The Jan. workshop will be held on Saturday, Jan. 16th at Community Hall from 1-4pm.  Come enjoy other community members while using your creative side! 

Fees per workshop: $3.00 for ages 13 and up/ $2.00 for ages 6 to 12 (Younger ages are free!)

WOMEN / FEMALE TEEN SELF DEFENSE CLASS

This great program is taught by Sandpoint Taekwondo.  This class covers basic self defense specific for female teens and women.  The class will be co-instructed by a female instructor.  Classes will be held on Wednesday evenings. This class is open to women / teens 13 yrs and up, and takes place at Sandpoint Taekwondo (31829 Hwy 200, the old Funtastics Building) from 6-7pm. Session #2 takes place on Wednesday, January 20th.  Cost is $15/person ($2 city discount) and includes a take home workbook. 

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Monday, January 18th.

 

 

$8 FRIDAY NIGHT SKI AND SNOWBOARD SPECIAL

Schweitzer Mountain Friday Night Ski and Snowboard Special is Back!  Sandpoint Parks and Recreation will sell $8 lift tickets this week to night ski or board on Friday January 22nd. Purchase your tickets for this date at the Sandcreek Schweitzer Conoco on the corner of Hwy 95 and Schweitzer cut-off road.

Coupons will not be available at the Schweitzer Ticket Office; they must be purchased before driving up. Note: $8 lift tickets are available for skiers and boarders of all ages.

 

Each weekend between January 8th and March 5th a new community fundraising group will be selling $8 lift tickets to night ski or board on Schweitzer Mountain. (call Parks and Rec. at 263-3613 for a list detailing those groups-they change from week to week.) $8 coupons are “usually made available by each group” for purchase at the Schweitzer Conoco on the corner of Hwy 95 and Schweitzer cut-off road. 

 

Local students may also rent a snowboard or skis for only $12 at The Source on Schweitzer.  To take advantage of this opportunity, a rental waiver signed by a legal guardian must accompany the student for the first rental.  It will then be placed on file for subsequent rentals for the season.  Make sure to tell the rental shop that you want the night student special deal. This program does not provide ANY adult on-site supervision.  

 

 

MOUNTAIN ADVENTURE MOONLIGHT SNOWSHOE

Sandpoint Parks and Recreation and Schweitzer bring this wonderful and inspiring trip.  View the wonder of the snow-covered mountain and forest under the light of the full moon.  $30 fee includes gear rental and leader. Pre-Registration is required.  This adventure will be on Saturday, January 30th, during the full moon.  Space is limited so sign up early.  Registration Deadline is Wednesday January 27th, 2010.  Meet at the Schweitzer Activity Center at 7:30pm on the 30th.
